Veil Maker is done. |
| Posted on May 4, 2007 by ctothej
Although they have spent the last year writing their new full length, it will not see the light of day. Due to conflicting levels of commitment to touring, the boys of Veil Maker have decided to call it quits and move on to other things.
In addition to their performance on May 19th, Veil Maker will have one last show on June 10th. Shortly after their last performance, the band plans to commit to tape live recordings of the songs they have composed over the past year. These will not see a formal release but will be circulated to interested parties. Calvin McElroy of Smorgasbord will be joining the band on bass for these shows and recordings.
A multiplicity of thanks are in order for making this band both possible and a pleasure, including but not limited to: Philip Marshall, Jack Phavone, Real Cardinal, Fields to Flood, G.W. Nichol, Leslie Predy, Sara Dakus, Uncle Skippy, Helder Pedro, The Line Atlantic, Jayden, Garrett, Hey Nostradamus!, Atrophy Manuscript, Oscar Granero, Geoff Hawryluk, Hannes Bezuidenhout, Circle Square/End Credits... the list goes on.
Matt Meeboer and Cecil Frena will continue to write together as both are now involved in a new project, Aurora, along with Nano Uribe (Storyboard), Allan Harding (millions of bands), Aaron Brink (HAW), Janet Chung (HLWE) and Real Cardinal (Comaduster). Look for recordings and some touring from Aurora this summer.
Please come out one last time and sing along with predominantly instrumental music. All attendants of this show will receive a free copy of Veil Maker's do not be afraid EP.

Matt and Cecil interviewed in MOTE MGZN! |

Quote:
MOTE: How long was the idea of Veil Maker in the works before the band members, and ultimately the EP, came to fruition?
Cecil: Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit was hovering over the waters. Let me explain this passage to you. The deep represents how deep I am, while the surface represents the linear nature of time, which culminates in the release of our huge, epic EP. BAM! So pretty much a long time.

Wavelength Music Series review Veil Maker |
| Posted on December 5, 2006 by flip
I haven't seen this review here, so I'm hoping it's new. It's got the label listed as Seraph/Saraph, so it has to be fairly recent...

Do Not Be Afraid EP (Seraph/Saraph,www.veilmaker.net)
This is an odd and difficult EP to review, because Veil Maker, while being a really talented, exciting band, are just too all over the place to really get a handle on any particular sound. For example, the first track, “Coral Landing,” begins with dark, sludgy guitar nu-metal riffs, which eventually transform into xylophones for an indie-style chorus which then slips into an emo-ish breakdown. The band expertly makes the ruckus sound cohesive, but some listeners may not be satisfied by the random-shuffle style. I admit it’s a difficult argument to make, because diversity in music should be celebrated and Veil Maker is nothing if not adventurous. But when the high-octane screamo track “Dirt Veins” leads into the Bedhead-like intro of “Ashen Prayer Beads”, for example, it just saps the momentum of the EP, which later jumps randomly into Green Day-like punk rock. I suppose what it all comes down to is that like anyone else, sometimes you just want to rock… so just give me from 2:13 to 4:39 on “The Realm of Ends” and I’ll be happy. -Tyrone Warner

Below is an excerpt from their review of the VM EP.
Quote:
Edmonton's own, Veil Maker released their debut EP early this year and received acclaim from music critics across the globe. The EP which takes the expansive title "Do Not be Afraid, Though Briars and Thorns Surround You and You Live among Scorpions" features five tracks that amalgamate musical genres into a sound that is unique and distinctive.

Veil Maker reviewed in the Edmonton Journal. |
| Posted on August 20, 2006 by ctothej
do not be afraid was reviewed in this week's Edmonton Journal capsule music reviews!
Quote:
With such a wordy album title, it's easy to be afraid of the results. There's no need to panic at the disco. While Veil Maker's prog-rock adventures are the sonic equivalent of a 16-word title, the local virtuosos are like boy scouts - willing to take listeners by the hand and guide them through lush forests of chiming melodies and xylophones, tunnels of shifting time signatures and seas of stormy guitars, screams and thrashing drumes. Every song feels like a 10-hour journey, but you arrive feeling exhilarated, not exhausted. "I'm covered with mosquitoes, but beaming all the same," CJ Murdoch sings on Coral Landing. His vocals - often reminiscent of Maynard James Keenan fronting A Perfect Circle - are sensual and languid, but don't always sound like they're properly miked or mixed into the morass. That's really the only problem with Afraid.
